BRANDON’S STORY

Brandon Siler, founder of Legacy Pro Sports Foundation, has had more than his share of personal experience with mental health issues and has watched many of his teammates struggle with it throughout his career.  Brandon’s 6-year NFL career came to an abrupt end when his teammate and good friend Jevon Belcher committed suicide at the Kansas City Chiefs facility in 2012. Afterwards, Brandon lost his love for the game, retired from football, and immediately had to battle his own mental health issues. Enduring two years of anxiety and depression Brandon attempted suicide twice.  He also witnessed teammates and friends Vincent Jackson, Paul Oliver, Junior Seau, and Shane Olivia lose their life while battling their mental health issues.  Brandon credits winning his battle with mental health to finding God and the same unique resources that are implemented in the Legacy Healthy Minds program.

35% of Professional Athletes Struggle with Mental Illness

2% of Student-Athletes will go on to play professionally and according to various studies and reports, the percentage of professional athletes who struggle with mental illness is significantly higher than the general population. The intense pressure and scrutiny that comes with being a professional athlete can take a toll on mental health, leading to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. These numbers highlight the need for increased support and resources for athletes to address their mental health and well-being.

20 – 35% of College Athletes Struggle with Mental Illness

Mental illness is a prevalent issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide, including college athletes. Unfortunately, mental health concerns in athletes are often overlooked, and the signs of mental illness can be challenging to identify. However, there are some common signs that may include changes in mood, such as increased irritability, sadness, or anxiety. Other symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns, changes in appetite or inconsistent performance.

Technology-based Solutions

Technology-based solutions for mental health have been gaining popularity in recent years, thanks to the following advancements in neuroscience and digital technologies:

  • Biofeedback
  • Neurofeedback
  • Brain Mapping

Biofeedback, neurofeedback, and brain mapping therapy are some of the most promising therapies that utilize technology to assess and treat mental illness. Biofeedback involves monitoring a person’s physiological responses to stress, anxiety, or depression, and teaching them techniques to control those responses. Neurofeedback involves training the brain to regulate its own activity, improving cognitive and emotional functioning. Brain mapping therapy uses advanced imaging techniques to identify areas of the brain that may be affected by mental illness and target those areas for treatment. Overall, these technology-based solutions offer a unique and effective approach that can be tailored to individual needs, providing hope and relief to those suffering from mental health issues.

BIOFEEDBACK

Biofeedback is a type of therapy that focuses on the connection between the mind and body to enhance both physical and mental well-being. To begin a biofeedback session, a skilled practitioner will use non-invasive sensors to measure specific bodily functions, which will then be displayed on a screen. Through practice and guidance, individuals can learn to modify these functions without the use of equipment.

BRAIN MAPPING

An innovative technique that is gaining traction in the field of mental health, particularly in athletes. This technique involves the use of advanced neuroimaging technology to map the brain and identify any abnormalities or dysfunctions that may be contributing to mental health issues. By analyzing the activity and connectivity of various regions of the brain, brain mapping can help diagnose conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in athletes. Additionally, brain mapping can provide valuable insights into the effects of sports-related concussions and traumatic brain injuries on mental health.

Neurocognitive Disability

NEUROFEEDBACK

Neurofeedback, also referred to as EEG biofeedback, is a form of therapy that evaluates an athlete’s brainwave activity through computer-based analysis. It employs visual or auditory signals to assist patients in recognizing their thought patterns and seeking to alter them. As a result, patients can enhance their brain function and potentially alleviate signs of neurological disorders and mental health problems. This therapeutic intervention is known for providing immediate feedback and has been shown to be effective in enhancing brain regulation.
