The NFL Neurocognitive Disability Benefit is a monthly payment for former players with mild or moderate neurocognitive impairment: problems with memory, attention, processing speed or mood. It is part of the NFL Player Disability & Neurocognitive Benefit Plan.
How much the Neurocognitive benefit pays
Your level is determined after neuropsychological testing with the Plan’s neutral physicians.
Signs that may support a claim
- Forgetting conversations, names or appointments
- Losing your train of thought
- Taking longer to make decisions
- A short fuse, irritability, anxiety or depression
- Family members noticing changes before you do
The Neurocognitive deadline
You must apply within 7 years of the date you were released from your team. Miss it and the benefit is closed.
What the testing involves
The Plan sends you to its neutral physicians for tests of memory, attention, processing and mood. Preparation matters: make sure your medical history, including concussions and any prior neurological evaluations, is in front of them.
Neurocognitive benefits and CTE
CTE can only be confirmed after death. But the symptoms CTE NFL players live with, like memory loss, mood changes and trouble focusing, can support a Neurocognitive claim while you are living. Read about NFL CTE and brain injury benefits →
